Robert “Rob” Brown, Jr. retired after 32 years in the fire and emergency services, serving most recently as Fire Chief for the City of Fresno, CA. Chief Brown currently is with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), serving as the Chief Regional Coordinator for emergency management and homeland security, overseeing VDEM regional operations in Northern Virginia and the National Capital Region (Washington, DC). In addition, Chief Brown was appointed as the lead for Virginia during the recent National Special Security Event, Inauguration of the 45th President of the United States. To borrow from the famous movie quote from AFewGoodMen: “Deep down in places we don't talk about at parties” is the topic of personal adversity. This presentation builds on his widely popular “18 Minutes” presentation regarding his sudden encounter with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Vicarious Trauma and denial. “When in the Course of Human Events” is a direct, candid delivery of his personal journey through adversity that focuses on human mistakes, ignorance, accountability, rebound and tolerance. Monday, July 17 Session: 10:00 AM Tina Casola, LMFT (Licensed in CA-MFT40673) First Responders Trauma Specialists Tina Casola is a licensed mental health clinician who specializes in treating individuals who experience psychological distress as the result of witnessing and experiencing a variety of traumas. As a former Staff Therapist with the San Diego Veterans Health Administration and UCSD she understands the nature of these stress reactions and the concerns the people have about revealing their struggle and effects on their careers. An advocate for progressive behavioral health practices in Fire and EMS, Tina provides education to individuals, departments, businesses and other organizations desiring a better understanding of PTS and emotional distress. She is trained and experienced in facilitating effective treatments for PTSD and other stress related disorders with Veterans, Emergency Service Personnel and Civilians. Tuesday, July 18 Session: 10:00 AM John Sinclair Fire Chief, Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue and Emergency Manager, City of Ellensburg, Washington State Chief John Sinclair has held many positions in the fire and emergency service during his career, including firefighter, paramedic, lieutenant, battalion chief, assistant chief, and deputy chief. Chief Sinclair was a member of the IAFC's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Section for 19 years and served a four-year term as chair. Additionally, Chief Sinclair served on the Advisory Board of Fire and Emergency Television Network (FETN), the Advisory Board for Tacoma Community College and Central Washington University’s Paramedic Program and nine years on the Board of Directors for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Currently he represents the fire service on the National EMS Advisory Council. Chief Sinclair has assisted the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with a Bystander Response Project, and also worked with the American College of Surgeons Hartford Consensus I and II on Mass Casualty Incident Management. Tuesday, July 18 Session: 2:00 PM Adam Thiel Fire Commissioner City of Philadelphia Appointed in 2016, Commissioner Thiel is responsible for leading the department’s 2,600- plus uniformed and civilian members in addressing every facet of protecting our Nation’s fifth- largest city from fires and emergencies arising from all hazards. In February 2014, Adam was appointed to serve as a Deputy Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security for the Commonwealth of Virginia. In that role, he helped provide strategic direction, policy advice, management oversight, and operational coordination for eleven agencies with an overall budget of more than $3.1B and 30,000 employees. Deputy Secretary Thiel was directly responsible for the Departments of: Emergency Management, Fire Programs (including the State Fire Marshal's Office), Military Affairs (Virginia National Guard), and State Police, along with the state’s Homeland Security and Resilience portfolio. Adam served as the Governor’s deputy Homeland Security Advisor (dHSA), deputy Chief Resilience Officer (dCRO), Statewide Interoperability Coordinator (SWIC), and FirstNet State Single Point of Contact (SPOC).
