FLORIDA FIRE SERVICE July 2017 10 T he 2017 National EVT Academy kicked off May 15 at the Advanced Technology College (Daytona Beach) and hosted students from across the United States. More than 135 students attended this year’s academy, with the focus on practical equipment training, in addition to the EVT courses offered by the academy every year. A wide range of EVT classes were available to provide technicians a pathway to their Master Level certifications. Students could also take classes on Hale pumps, Kussmaul electronics, Cummins engines and heavy duty brakes, all of which are applicable to emergency apparatus repairs and fleet maintenance. The National EVT Academy is hosted by the Florida Fire Chief’s Association in cooperation with the Florida Fire and Emergency Services Foundation. The annual event is focused on providing EVT training to technicians from around the United States, helping them gain their EVT certifications while at the same time building practical skillsets. The technicians that attend the National EVT Academy are dedicated individuals who support the success of first responders each and every day by ensuring the apparatus serving our communities are always mission ready. The National EVT Academy also provides the students with networking opportunities by sharing classrooms with individuals from fire-rescue departments around the country. The Academy also boasts some of the best instructors in the EVT community. The courses are taught by volunteer Fleet Directors, Managers and Administrators from all over Florida and as far away as Virginia. Vendors from all over the country attend to teach the practical application classes for brakes, electronics, warning lighting, and engine repairs. There is also an element of fun during the week of classes and testing. This year’s annual dinner was held at the Daytona International Speedway and included taking pictures with cars on the infield before having dinner at the track. We also wrapped up the classes on Thursday with a barbeque luncheon and a raffle where tools, caps, gift cards, and prizes went to lucky students with the winning numbers. It is fitting to have a little fun before the testing begins on Friday morning and the week wraps up. If you are an EVT Technician interested in earning additional EVT certifications, or if you are looking for more training on specific component repairs or trouble shooting, please contact the Florida Fire Chief’s Association. Keep an eye on the FFCA website for information on the upcoming 2018 National EVT Academy for course information and registration details.
