Emergency Services Leadership Institute (ESLI)

Personal Qualities, Leadership & the Organization

COURSE OUTLINE: Module 2 will detail the importance of organizational design and development as it relates to meeting objectives.  The importance of establishing a meaningful, understandable, and accepted Mission, Vision, and Value Statement, and what they represent, will be emphasized.  This module will concentrate on the relationship between the personal and professional characteristics of a leader and the impact on the organization and highlight the transition from those who follow versus those who supervise.  This module will take a serious look at a variety of issues that impact the contemporary organization and will focus on strategic planning models that may help to deal with these issues.

The relationship between team development and the need to foster and share a common vision will be examined in the context of today’s fire and emergency service and compared to the fire and emergency service of the future.  The importance of accurate and regular communication in a changing demographic workforce is emphasized, as is the identification of various employee-driven and results-oriented reward and incentive programs.  Career and succession development will be addressed as organizational necessity.

The importance of a comprehensive, yet easy to understand, employee career development template will be addressed as a ‘roadmap’ for advancement that considers tenure, academic achievement, certification, rank, and job performance.  A range of leadership styles will be compared and discussed, as will understanding the difference between transactional versus transformational decision-making.  An important component of this module deals with change management and the balance that must be made, along with the potential impact to the organization, when facilitating change.

Ethics issues will be discussed, and examples provided, that will encourage perpetual sound ethical behavior at work and in your personal life.  Challenges and contradictions to maintaining the highest degree of ethical behavior will be discussed.  Modern technology and its impact on the fire service will be addressed, along with pragmatic approaches to cost / benefit ratio determinations in determining what level of technology is best for your organization in consideration of specific variables.  The impact, challenges, and advantages of fostering on a pro-education environment will be presented, as will the benefits of focusing on employee wellness and fitness in terms of personal health and the associated benefits to the organization, consistent with current guidelines.
